New music benefit concert features “The Music of Improvisation”

The entire theatre was humming — literally — at the new music concert organized by the Social Therapy Group to benefit the Institute’s international training programs. The concert — which drew about 100 participants to the Irondale Theatre Center on Wednesday, February 15 — featured collaborative improvisations by the critically acclaimed duo of composer/ flutist Robert Dick and pianist Ursel Schlicht; baroque flutist Don Hulbert; the up-and-coming Ensemble Moto Perpetuo led by its creative director, composer Amir Shpilman, and a breathing/choral improvisation that blended the vocalizations of musicians and audience. The performance was followed by a talkback with musicians led by Gwen Lowenheim, who teaches the Institute’s popular online course, Creating the World:  How to Foster Creative Community.
